Win 2003 hard disk to virtual Machine - p2

If you have a working Windows 2003 hard disk drive on a failed server you can use the following to transfer the contents to a virtual computer. Using similar steps the contents can be transferred to another physical machine, just remember to clone the hard disk to a backup image.

These instructions are listed by memory recall and may need tweaking for your situation.

Here are the required items:

1.       The working hard drive

2.       The virtual machine host

3.       A Win 2003 install iso and the product number belonging to the iso.

4.       A USB or CD Clonezilla boot disk

Using Clonezilla create a clone image of the hard disk, then create a recovery-iso using the expert menu of Clonezilla.

This guide uses Proxmox for a virtual host and transfer the recovery and Win 2003 install iso into the Proxmox store.

Creating a virtual machine, choosing the Win 2003/XP type settings using the default hard disk controller (LSI), an IDE hard disk of similar size to the hard disk, 2GB RAM and min 2 core virt-processor.

Set the CD to use the recovery iso and set to number 1 in the boot order.

Start up the Virtual Machine and use the recovery options to restore the image to the VM disk.

Once the recovery is finished shutdown the virtual machine and replace the recovery iso with the Win 2003 iso. Start the VM and wait for the Win 2003 install menu.

At the first menu of the Win 2003 iso choose install and then repair at the second menu. This repairs the install and does not delete the program installs or any saved data.

Once the repair has finished, shutdown the VM again and remove the Win 2003 iso from the CD. Start the VM and hopefully you have a working VM. Login and then repair/reinstall the software if needed.

If .Net is to be repaired install the windows 3.1 installer for Win 2003 first.

A similar method can be used when moving the hard disk from a failed machine to a working one. The caveat is to remember that the device drivers for Win2003/XP is needed for the working computer.
